Once the ice goes off Lake Erie we have some of the most tumultuous weather events in Chautauqua County. Some people find this aggravating and some find it incomprehensible. I find it exhilarating. It is a miracle of the Earth that it creates microclimates that only certain creatures enjoy. I happen to be one of them.
Monday Tadd and I cleaned the greenhouse out with hopes of filling it soon with our starts (which are all over the house right now.) It started out nippy and turned into a lovely day to work with the outside temp in the high 50’s and the greenhouse about 85.
The soil was warming but still frozen 6” down.
If you’ve lived it you know it. It is 75 degrees and you realize your feet are frigid. Every year I forget how cold the earth below me is and I must return to the house to get my heavy socks and boots back out, even if I may be in shirt sleeves.
Tuesday was one of those days that I think of as Mother Earth’s Reset. We woke to a 27 degree morning and an inch of snow. These shifts are due to the confluence of air off several large bodies of water surrounding us.
At the north end of Chautauqua Lake this morning the water was like glass at 6:55AM with snow covering the ground and continuing to fall occasionally. It was the type of day you could tell the sun would show it’s face eventually but not warm much.
By 9AM the wind was howling from the north and white caps were marching down the lake.It was one of those bitter cold days.
Patience is certainly a virtue while the Earth reawakens in the Spring. It hasn’t had to work too hard the past few years. We have had such mild winters recently, it seems to be especially difficult this more typical year after being covered in so much snow for so long.
Today, Wednesday, it was spitting snow with the sun shining brightly at 7:45 as I awoke.
I feel the need to garden. I think I will transplant inside today.
